Alacranes reef is an atoll reef, located 70 nautical miles (130 kilometers) north of Puerto Progreso Yucatan. Alacranes is a destination that offers a diversity of landscapes, influenced by Caribbean waters on its east side and Gulf of Mexico landscapes on its west side. It is a protected natural area of great importance in our country, as it is the largest coral structure in the Gulf of Mexico, besides being the only reef known and described in the seas of the state of Yucatan. In its interior there are five sandy islands (Isla P\u00e1jaros or Blanca, Isla Chica, Isla P\u00e9rez, Isla Muertos or Desertora and Isla Desterrada), which are important nesting and resting sites for marine birds that cross the route of the Gulf of Mexico and serve as refuge for boats during bad weather.<\/p>\n
The dives at Alacranes are varied in terms of depth, ranging from 8 meters to 30 meters. Generally, there are no strong currents, which allows divers to travel placidly through the destination and enjoy the scenery step by step and appreciate the abundance of particularly healthy coral in the area.
